Image Of the Day caption:
A radar view from the cockpit of a U.S. Air Force Hurricane Hunter (small white airplane icon) shows the eye of Hurricane Irma as the plane flies into the storm in early September 2017. During the flight, WHOI physical oceanographer Steve Jayne dropped Air-launched Autonomous Micro-profiling (ALAMO) floats designed to measure upper-ocean temperature and salinity as the storm approached and passed over them. The observations will be used to improve hurricane intensity forecasts and study the oceans response to hurricanes.
