Image of The Day caption:
On a foggy August morning swimmers, Ronnie Whims and Donny Collasius, dive into the water to remove the human occupied vehicle (HOV) Alvin's basket safety lines. Once all the pre-launch preparations were completed the sub was ready to explore a volcanic rift at Juan de Fuca. Dives at this location are routinely 2,500m (8,200 feet) deep and take six hours or longer to complete. Alvin is owned by the Navy and operated by WHOI. To date, the submersible has completed more than 4,600 dives.
