A BASEMENT BUOY
As scientists reconcile their research goals with a global pandemic, many have to find creative ways to bring big projects home. Matthew Long, a marine chemist and lead scientist in the MACHINE (Marine Chemistry, Instrumentation, and Engineering) Lab, combined his hobbies and scientific interests to finish construction on a solar powered communications buoy in his basement. The device will allow for long-term monitoring of coastal carbon cycling. Now he just needs to find a way to get it out of the house.
