Graduate student Chawalit Net Charoenpong waves to shipmates just before entering the human-occupied submersible Alvin for his first dive to the seafloor. Charoenpong is exploring how vents produce ammonia a key compound used to make amino acids, the foundation for proteins and enzymes. Some scientists theorize that life on Earth could have emerged at vents.
