"I think it was a good omen, as everything has gone smoothly so far," is how WHOI senior scientist Al Plueddemann described the appearance of a snowy owl on the second day of an ongoing cruise aboard R/V Knorr. Plueddemann and his team are deploying the first moorings and gliders of the Pioneer Array, a part of the NSF-funded Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI). The instruments and vehicles provide the foundation of infrastructure that will soon deliver comprehensive, real-time measurements of conditions on the edge of the continental shelf south of Massachusetts to support research and forecasting.
