Image Of the Day caption:
WHOI mooring technician Meghan Donohue splices a line on the research vessel Neil Armstrong during a voyage from Woods Hole to a Global Array site in the Irminger Sea. The Global Array is part of the Ocean Observatories Initiative, funded by the National Science Foundationa system of long-term ocean arrays that gather data around the clock and relay them ashore in near real time to scientists, educators, and the public. The Irminger Sea is a strategic location a region where warm northward-flowing waters lose their heat to the atmosphere, become colder and denser, and sink to the depths to propel the Global Ocean Conveyor.
