This cruise involves the deployment of moorings and other instruments at the first global site of the OOI Station Papa location in the Gulf of Alaska. A team led by Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, with their partners at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, is embarking on an approximately two-week cruise that started on July 15 to deploy this equipment. The cruise, on the Scripps/U.S. Navy Research Vessel (R/V) Melville will depart and return from the University of Washington dock in Seattle, WA. The team will deploy one Global Hybrid Profiler Mooring, two Mesoscale Flanking Moorings, and three Global Gliders. There will be a total of 57 instruments deployed.
Image Of the Day caption:
Technicians aboard the research vessel Melville deploy a wire-following profiler as part of a Global Hybrid Profiler Mooring at Station Papa in the Northeast Pacific Ocean. The Station Papa installation is a key step in the Ocean Observatories Initiative, a long-term, multi-institution project to measure currents and ocean conditions at several locations around the globe. The wire-following profiler will measure current velocity and other conditions as it travels up and down a cable that runs from an anchor to a float 20 meters below the sea surface. WHOI mooring technicians worked with a team led by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography to deploy three moorings and three gliders during the 2013 cruise.
