The autonomous underwater vehicle Orpheus, developed by WHOI in collaboration with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, is the first in a new class of vehicles designed to withstand the pressure of the ocean’s hadal zone below 6,000 meters (19,685 feet). Once more are built, Orpheus-class vehicles will be able to work independently or as a networked fleet, ushering in a new era of hadal research.
