Cruise: NSF Coral Chorus, PIs Aran Mooney, Amy Apprill and Joel Llopiz. On board R/V Walton Smith Location: St. John, US Virgin Islands.
Caption from 2021 WHOI Wall Calendar, July:
As part of his Semester at WHOI, Matt Stefanak, a senior at Middlebury College, collected fish larvae in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands. His work was part of the National Science Foundation–funded Coral Chorus project led by WHOI biologists Joel Llopiz, Aran Mooney, and Amy Apprill. The project, which aims to understand the role underwater sounds play in coral reef health, provided Stefanak with an opportunity to snorkel through unique environments like Hurricane Hole (shown here), where a large diversity of corals grow among mangroves.
