ENGINEERS COLLABORATE ON NEW SENSORS AT HACK-A-THON
Members of WHOI’s Marine Unmanned Robotics Acoustics Lab (MURAL) gathered for a hardware hack-a-thon event July 26–30, coinciding with the grand opening of the Institution’s new Quissett Research Facility and AVAST, or the Autonomous Vehicles and Sensor Technologies Program. A cohort of eight WHOI engineers collaborated on a new underwater acoustic sensor design inspired by the mechanics of bat ears. Using 3D-printed parts, small Arduino computer boards, and servomotors, the team developed several prototypes that aim to make acoustic sensors cheaper and more accurate in detecting the location of aquatic vehicles.
