Image of The Day caption:
New graduate students from the MIT-WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography gather on the rear deck of the Corwith Cramer, an educational sailing ship operated by the Sea Education Association. Every summer, new MIT-WHOI students embark on a ten-day initiation to life and work at sea. Students get a hands-on course in sea-going skills--such as how to handle rigging and how to navigate by the stars--and fundamental ocean sampling techniques--towing plankton nets, pulling sediment cores, lowering conductivity-temperature-depth samplers and current meters.
