Caption from 2023 WHOI Wall Calendar, August:
Common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) are a common sight riding a bow wave of R/V Atlantis, which is owned by the U.S. Navy and operated by WHOI. Lance Wills, an able-bodied seaman on the ship, captured this photo west of Long Beach, California. “Working on the Atlantis has transported me to the farthest reaches of the globe,” Wills says. “From Patagonia to Greenland, across vast oceans to Easter Island, the Galapagos, and the mouth of the Amazon River. Every day at sea is different. What more could any photographer want?”
