Image Of the Day caption:
On Earth Day 2015, members of the Woods Hole and WHOI communities gathered to celebrate the life of a European beech tree that has stood on campus for the last 150 years. The tree was infected with a bark canker disease and was rapidly declining in health despite efforts to nurture it. At the close of the celebration, Jeff Hamilton of Hamilton Tree & Landscape, WHOI VP for Academic Programs Jim Yoder, Rev. Deb Warner of the Woods Hole Church of the Messiah, WHOI President and Director Susan Avery, and others joined hands around the tree. A new European beech tree will be planted around Memorial Day.
