Image Of the Day caption:
James Yoder, Vice President for Academic Programs and Dean, presents the Rear Admiral Richard F. Pittenger Fellowship Award to MIT-WHOI Joint Program student Thomas Miller. Miller, an ocean engineering Masters candidate, is also a submarine lieutenant in the Navy. He is studying how sound waves reverberate against the sea floor, and will be assigned to a submarine after graduation in 2015. The award, given each year to a naval officer in the Joint Program, was established in 2004. It honors the Institutions former Vice President of Marine Operations, Richard Pittenger, who retired that year after 14 years at WHOI and 37 years in the Navy.
