Caption from Oceanus magazine, Vol. 47, No. 2, Pg. 51:
WHOI scientist Rich Camilli deploys his small underwater mass spectrometer, called TETHYS, which measures tiny quantities of chemicals in the sea. In this case, it monitored how sponges absorbed nitrogen containing ammonia and converted it into nitrogen gas. The research offers clues to whether increased fertilizer runoff into the ocean might allow sponges to out-compete corals.
