Hooked onto to safety line, WHOI engineer John Kemp, head of deck operations, hooks a line onto the Camper vehicle after it came up from the first of three seafloor missions Tuesday. Camper went on three dives in two locations, operating 17 hours over a 28-hour period beginning 8 p.m. Monday.

Hooked onto a safety line on the back of the Swedish icebreaker Oden, WHOI senior engineering assistant John Kemp hooks a line onto the Camper towed sampling vehicle after it was raised from the Arctic seafloor in July 2007. Kemp--an at-sea/field leader for the WHOI Mooring Operations, Engineering, and Field Support Group--spends several months a year at sea, assembling and deploying instrumented buoys, moorings, and other equipment.
