Image Of the Day caption:
WHOI engineer Marshall Swartz (right) instructs Louis Clement, a post-doctoral scientist at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, on the technical intricacies of a CTD rosette equipped with a lowered acoustic doppler current profiler (LADCP). The two were participating in DoMORE (Dynamics on Mid-Ocean Ridge flank Experiment ), a cruise intended to improve understanding the effects of turbulence and mixing generated along slow-spreading mid-ocean ridges, which cover a large fraction of the global sea floor. Current evidence suggests that it is in these regions that most of the cold bottom waters created near the Antarctic continent gain buoyancy and upwell to shallower depths, closing the global overturning circulation loop.
