WHOI President and Director Jim Luyten (center) accepts the best wishes and a gift of appreciation from the Institution's trustees during a January 2008 meeting in New York City. Luyten is flanked by his son, Elijah (right) and Newt Merrill, chairman of the WHOI Board of Trustees as they examine a piece of glass-and-glycerine artwork commissioned to recognize Jim's career as a physical oceanographer. Luyten will officially step down today as 8th director of the Institution, the culmination of 37 years on the scientific staff.
