Image of The Day caption:
Daily commutes often begin with getting your vehicle out of the garage. And so it is even for the human-occupied submersible Alvin. The 35,000-pound sub slides on a railway out of its hanger aboard the research vessel Atlantis to a powerful A-frame (in background) at the ship's stern. The A-frame hoists Alvin into the ocean en route to a day at the office on the seafloor. Today, Alvin's workplace is the bottom of the Gulf Mexico, where it is investigating impacts from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Read about it on the Dive & Discover website.
