Field safety personnel keep a careful eye on potentially dangerous macrofauna (also known as penguins) while WHOI biologist Sam Laney (far right) collects plankton samples at the edge of sea ice in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. Laney traveled to McMurdo Station this past December as a co-instructor in the NSF-sponsored Early Career Antarctic Biology Training Program. This intensive four-week course immerses promising early career scientists in Antarctic biology and ecology. Participants receive comprehensive training in Antarctic physical and life sciences, develop research projects that use McMurdo lab and analytical facilities, and participate in field training exercises, such as this helicopter-based sampling at the ice edge.
