U.S. Senator Edward Markey, D-Mass., (back row, center) wishes the submersible Alvin a happy 50th birthday while holding a t-shirt commemorating the occasion during a recent visit to WHOI. Markey came to learn more about WHOI's work in coastal ocean research and engineering, focusing on issues such as red tide, the Gulf Stream's impact on fisheries, and the ocean's role in climate change. Markey met with Institution President and Director Susan Avery and others during his visit. Markey also had Alvin, its accomplishments, and its future entered into the Congressional Record as part of its 50th anniversary.
