Image Of the Day caption:
The North Atlantic can be an inhospitable place, especially in late winter, but that is exactly when WHOI physical oceanographer Robert Pickart needs to be there. Pickart and his international team are currently on board the NATO research vessel Alliance examining the nature of interactions between the atmosphere and ocean near the edge of the sea ice between Greenland and Iceland, a key part of Earth's climate system. Last week, a storm limited the oceanographic data they could collect but gave them a close-up look at the air-sea interactions they had come to study.
