Image of The Day caption:
British sculptor Mark Coreth carved a polar bear out of ice, with a bronze skeleton inside, in hopes of sending an environmental message when the Arctic animal art piece melts. The sculpture stands in Kongens Nytorv Square in Copenhagen, site of the United Nations Climate Conference. The ice sculpture is designed to be the same height as the average thickness of the floating sea ice in the Arctic Ocean. As the ice bear melts into a pool of water and the skeleton begins to appear, Coreth has said he hopes it will send a message to the world about how global warming is threatening the existence of polar bears. The ice bear was fully intact when the conference opened Dec. 7. This photo was taken on Dec. 13.
