Caption from 2022 WHOI wall calendar, March:
A curious polar bear (Ursus maritimus) checks out the Louis St. Laurent icebreaker. This bear was a surprising sight, recounts WHOI scientist Isabela Le Bras. It was spotted far north and far from land the day before the science party was preparing to disembark and work on the sea ice. Le Bras was on the cruise to study the Beaufort Gyre, one of the Arctic Ocean’s primary circulation features and a critical part of the regional and global climate system.
