Image Of the Day caption:
Alvin pilot Mike Skowronski (center) and pilot-in-training Jefferson Grau (left) peer out onto the seafloor in the Gulf of Mexico during the recent Alvin Science Verification Cruise. One of the key improvements made to the submersible during its recent overhaul and upgrade was the addition of two additional, larger, forward-facing viewports. These give observers in the sub a view that overlaps with the center viewport to aid in observation, navigation, and sample collection.
