Image of The Day caption:
Livingston Island in the South Shetlands rises sharply in front of the L.M. Gould's bow in December 2011 after the ship departs Palmer Station, the U.S. research station on the western Antarctic Peninsula. Aboard and heading home after fieldwork was WHOI scientist Scott Doney, who participates in the Palmer Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project, a long-running program funded by the National Science Foundation to study the marine ecosystem along the Peninsula and assess impacts of climate change in this rapidly-warming region.
