Armas Sture is at the wheel as Atlantis II captain Emerson Hiller consults with chief scientist John Hunt, right, during the 1969 Black Sea cruise. Over his twenty-four years at WHOI, Hiller was successively master of Chain, Atlantis II, and Knorr. While earning a reputation among oceanographers for leadership, seamanship, and affability, he played host aboard WHOI ships to the royal family of Monaco, U.S. Vice President Hubert Humphrey, and groups of orphans in foreign ports.
