Caption from 2023 WHOI Wall Calendar, May:
Pelagic gooseneck barnacles (Lepas anatifera) will grow on almost any hard surface they find, including on this Ocean Observatories Initiative mooring retrieved from the Southern Atlantic Ocean. The Observatory has five active locations across the globe and has transformed ocean research by establishing a network of sensors that make real-time ocean observations, which are freely available to anyone with an internet connection. These data are helping scientists study the ocean’s role in the global carbon cycle, extreme weather conditions, and how the physics, chemistry, and biology of the water column may be changing.
