WHOI scientists brought in underwater instruments normally used to explore the deep ocean to hunt for geothermal activity at the bottom of Yellowstone Lake in Yellowstone National Park. WHOI engineer Greg Packard (right) and consultant Greg Kurras maneuver WHOIs autonomous underwater vehicle REMUS into the lake in 2015, the first year of a multi-year, multi-institutional project led by WHOI scientist Rob Sohn. With REMUS, scientists obtained high-resolution maps showing pockmarks on the lake bed created by hot fluid flows. Below the lake lies an active geological hot spot that also causes the geysers, fumaroles, and other distinctive volcanic features in the park.
