George Tupper Vector with Averaging Current Meter (VACM), which temporarily records the direction of water flow, then makes a permanent record of the average reading at programmed intervals. The VACM can stay at sea, monitoring current continuously and recording the vector averages every 15 minutes, for a year.

Engineer George Tupper began designing, building, and maintaining oceanographic instruments in the 1970s, including these current meters on display at WHOI. During his career spent two to three months each year at sea on research cruises. He "retired" in 2001, but since then has participated as a casual employee on more than 40 additional cruises, traveling to far-flung (and often storm-lashed) places like the Irminger Sea off Greenland.
