Happy Birthday, Alvin!
This summer, WHOI marked the 60th anniversary of Alvin’s commissioning on June 26, 1964, its first free dive on August 4, 1964, and celebrated six decades of safe, successful scientific study. Today, Alvin is still in service to the scientific community and conducts about 100 dives per year on missions to study processes that create and shape Earth’s crust, the chemical conditions that support life in extreme environments, and the vast diversity of life in the deep sea. On the anniversary of its commissioning, Alvin was diving in the Aleutian Margin off Alaska.
