Megan May is collecting samples of water, sand, and shellfish to study antibiotic resistance in the marine environment.
At Old Silver Beach, North Falmouth.
Image Of the Day caption:
MIT-WHOI Joint Program graduate student Megan May searches a rock jetty near Old Silver Beach on Buzzards Bay for clams. May is studying natural antibiotic resistance in the coastal environment that many microbes use as a defense mechanism and how human activity such as sewage discharge may be affecting microbes' ability to defend themselves. Understanding where and how it occurs could help researchers fight the increase in antibiotic resistance that the CDC has called one of our most serious health threats.
