Maggie Johnson exposed coral samples to low levels of oxygen at the Smithsonian Institution’s Marine Global Earth Observatory (MarineGEO) lab in Panama. A sample of staghorn coral (Acropora sp.) (shown here) shows significant tissue loss within two days of exposure to low oxygen conditions in the lab.
