This fogbow over floating ice in the Beaufort Sea is similar to a rainbow, but appears white due to diffraction of the light waves from the smaller fog droplets. The colorful repeating arcs, unusually vivid here, occur due to interference between the waves of light passing through the tiny droplets. This photo was taken by WHOI guest investigator Gideon Billings during summer field trials to test an Autonomous Underwater Glider in the icy ocean, led by WHOI scientists Richard Camilli and Ted Maksym.
