On a rainy day in October, Capt. Diego Mello brought R/V Oceanus home on its next-to-last science mission before the ship was retired by the National Science Foundation. Capt. Mello served on the ship for 15 years, working his way up from second mate to master, or captain. On Nov. 18, he saluted Oceanus with a lighthearted and moving speech before family, friends, and crewmates at a celebration at WHOI for the ship and its crew.
