The last people to arrive on the Oden were also the first to leave-if only for an hour or so. The helicopter crew came aboard only a few hours before the icebreaker left Longyearbyren on Sunday. By today, they were opening up a long box in which the helicopter's three rotary blades were carefully stored. One by one, they put the wings on their whirlybird, in preparation for the first of many reconnaissance flights to scout ahead for "leads," or places where there is open water or thin ice. Following their leads, Oden can make progress through the ice pack more easily and quickly.
