There's only one helicopter onboard. "Oden is our backup," Stenvall points out pointedly. If something happens, the ship will have to go to the rescue. For that reason, the helicopter travels no farther than 20 nautical miles from the ship. Pilots wear warm exposure suits, and the helicopter is equipped with a shotgun, tent, sleeping bags, food, and cooking fuel in case weather conditions, which are highly changeable, prevent the ship from finding the pilots quickly. To the degree possible, scientific and helicopter operations are coordinated. If something happens, the first priority is the safety of people. Even if an expensive piece of scientific equipment is overboard, the crew will have to cut the line.
