At least twice a day, helicopters fly off, roving ahead of Oden to search for good leads. With their bird's-eye view, they can see far beyond the icebreaker in all directions. Their missions are essential to save time and money. They don't want to pick a lead that soon ends in an icy cul-de-sac. Instead they think three or four leads ahead, linking leads together.
