It was only a coincidence, but we did have fireworks today-not necessarily to celebrate the United States' birthday, but rather to ensure that we're still around next July 4. Those people who will go onto the ice during this expedition to set up seismometers, or those who will use a small boat in leads to recover instruments, required training to shoot a pump-action shotgun. It holds five 28-gram lead slugs that, as Ulf Hedman, our expedition leader, put it, "provides good energy at short range." Hedman said when a polar bear gets about 20 meters away, "that is when you have to make a decision." After training, our helicopter pilots practiced their marksmanship on clay skeets. Their aim was exceptional, which was quite reassuring.
