WHOI President and Director Mark Abbott (left) and U.S. Chief of Naval Research Rear Adm. Mathias Winter stand next to a mooring anchor frame in the Laboratory for Ocean Sensors and Observing Systems (LOSOS). Admiral Winter toured the Institution in January and spoke with WHOI researchers and with U.S. Navy students enrolled in the MIT-WHOI Joint Program; the program has offered a master's degree for U.S. naval officers since 1970. WHOI and the Navy have a long history of partnership: From its inception, WHOI has conducted Navy-sponsored research, and the Navy owns WHOI's two largest research vessels, Atlantis and Neil Armstrong.
