Image Of the Day caption:
A REMUS 100 "ICEBOT" autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) is prepared for a July 2012 mission to map the hazard-filled edge of a glacier in Southwest Greenland. Once the team, led by Fiamma Straneo and Sarah Das, launched the vehicle, they could track it underwater from their field camp via a radio buoy in the fjord. They could also then direct the ICEBOT back to the beach at the end of the mission for easy recovery. If something went wrong with the vehicle, or communications from the radio buoy was lost, the operator could hop back on the fishing skiff they chartered for their operations and recover it.
