Image of The Day caption:
In April 2009, onboard the Research Vessel Knorr, the at-sea operations team maneuvers the Long Core release module into place prior to its deployment. The release module has an acoustic modem for communications, and an array of sensors used to precisely position the 45 meter long corer above the sea floor before penetration. Sub Seafloor samples from the Long Core will be used to study climate history, sea-level change, and a variety of other scientific puzzles whose secrets are buried in sediments at the bottom of the sea.
