Caption from Down to the Sea for Science, pg. 155:
Located on the south shore of the island, facing the open ocean, the Martha's Vineyard Coastal Observatory provides ideal conditions for studying coastal processes. A wide variety of sensors attached to a near-shore seafloor node, a meteorological mast, and this tower located 1.8 miles (3 kilometers) offshore send data by cable to a small beachfront laboratory, where they can be distributed via the internet.
