They are trialing a pole deployed spirometer (measures exhalation flow rate) and there were dolphins around so they took the opportunity to paddle with them.
Image Of the Day caption:
Scientific technician Luis Lamar from the WHOI Advanced Imaging and Visualization Lab and assistant professor of biology at Texas A&M University Corpus Christie Andreas Fahlman paddle with a pod of dusky dolphins off the coast of the Kaikoura Peninsula on New Zealands South Island. The two were part of a research team that spent three weeks in February and March 2013 pursuing one of the oceans most iconic yet elusive species: the sperm whale. The team captured sound, depth, and photo identification data on 15 individual sperm whales. This research was performed under New Zealand Department of Conservation Permit number 35604-MAR.
