R/V Atlantis (left) and R/V Neil Armstrong recently came out of drydock at Detyen's Shipyards in Charleston, S.C. Atlantis was in for scheduled maintenance, while Neil Armstrong had the remainder of its science gear installed after sailing from Anacortes, Wash., where it was built. Both ships have busy schedules in 2016, with Atlantis transporting Alvin to dive sites in the Atlantic and Pacific, and Neil Armstrong beginning its career as a part of the U.S. academic research fleet.

Top to bottom: The trip from Anacortes to Woods Hole began in 2014 when the ship first touched water off a pier at Dakota Creek Industries shipyard. After sea trials and acceptance trials in 2015, Neil Armstrong= made its inaugural voyage down the West Coast to San Francisco and eventually to the Panama Canal and the Atlantic Ocean. In Charleston, N.C., it received the bulk of its scientific instruments and also met WHOIs other research vessel, Atlantis, for the first time before sailing to Woods Hole in April 2016.
