Inset image (shown here)—Steve Manganini (black shirt) directs deployment of a sediment trap mooring in the Arabian Sea in 1995. Background—The scanning electron microscope preparation process dehydrated the organic material contained in a planktonic fecal pellet collected in the North Atlantic so that only the calcite coccoliths it contained can be seen. (Compare with the page 6 transmission electron microscope image of a fecal pellet that was collected by the same sediment trap but where organic material is preserved.)
