Isabela Le Bras, Physical Oceanography
Isabela Le Bras was born to a Mexican mother and a French father, both earth scientists. She was a rebellious child and to this day does not wear matching socks. In the end, though, she has followed in her parents footsteps and loves studying the physics of our planet. She even averaged the distance between their home countries and ended up in the North Atlantic Ocean. When she is not staring at plots of the Gulf Stream or the Deep Western Boundary Current, she can be found windsurfing, using landlines, or crowding the mushrooms. She also enjoys playing guitar and singing in her band, Pistol Shrimp. Her Ph.D. advisor is WHOI physical oceanographer John Toole, and her mentor on this article was Peter Spotts, longtime science writer for The Christian Science Monitor.
