As western Greenland came into view, first-time visitors like myself glued our faces to the tiny round airplane windows, watching ice, rock, and ocean drift by below. Our flight path took us past Taterat Glacier, a river of ice that drains the Sugar Top Ice Cap. This ice cap is a smaller cousin of the Greenland ice sheet to the east (an ice mass the size of Mexico).

Researchers who camped and worked on Greenland's ice sheet this summer soaked in their initial glimpses of the huge Arctic island. "As western Greenland came into view, first-time visitors like myself glued our faces to the tiny round airplane windows, watching ice, rock, and ocean drift by below," wrote photographer Chris Linder in an online dispatch hosted by Polar Discovery. "Our flight path took us past Taterat Glacier, a river of ice that drains the Sugar Top Ice Cap.
