Image of The Day caption:
Summer Student Fellow Stephanie Chin, of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, works with WHOI senior machinist Jim Brown to fabricate components for her summer project ?a biologic pump sampler prototype for the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) Sentry. Marine biologists often use pump samplers underwater to look at organisms filtered through large amounts of seawater, but they are traditionally attached to a remotely operated vehicle or on fixed moorings. By creating a pump sampler for an AUV, Chin and WHOI engineer Dana Yoerger hope to expand the possibilities of underwater biology exploration.
