Image of The Day caption:
This white shark was spotted off Chatham during a tagging cruise in 2010.During the last few summers the number of white sharks on Cape Cod appears to have increased. The presence of white sharks around Chatham is probably related to food - in this case a rapidly growing gray seal population. This week Woods Hole Oceanographic Insitution (WHOI) is hosting two public talks on sharks in Redfield Auditorium. Learn more about White Sharks in our Back Yard with Marine Biologist, Greg Skomal at the Science Made Public talk on Tuesday, August 2, 2:30 p.m. On Friday August 5, Noon, Peanut Butter Club presents author Juliet Eilperin and her book Demon Fish: Travels Through the Hidden World of Sharks. Juliet investigates the fascinating ways different individuals and cultures relate to the ocean's top predator.
